When it comes to replacing your roof, it’s understandable to have a lot of questions. One common question our clients ask us is whether or not you can stay in your home while your roof is being replaced.

The short answer is YES! however, it’s important to note some key considerations:

Consider the timeline
It’s important to find out the start and complete time of your roof replacement. This way you can avoid scheduling anything that could be impacted such as family events and gatherings. Not only would this be inconvenient for your guests but also the roofers too!

Consider the pets
The average roof replacement job takes less than a week to accomplish but during this time, the roofers will be making quite a bit of noise as they tear off existing shingles and replace. If you already have a dog who is sensitive to sound, you might want to consider having them stay with a friend or family member for the duration of the job. This not only makes it a more pleasant stay at home experience for you, but it avoids the constant barking alongside the hammering as well.

Consider the work environment
Remote work has increased now more than ever so if you are in the remote work industry and require a lot of video and phone calls throughout your workday, you might want to consider working elsewhere for the duration of your roof replacement. Roofing companies have tight deadlines to adhere to so it’s important to be respectful and work with your roofing company in this regard.

Consider the kids
If you have children who will be at home while your roof is being replaced, please be mindful of their safety. Inform them the days the roofers will be at the house and set up rules for any outdoor play. Keep in mind that it’s not the roofing company’s job to ensure your child plays around your home safely. It’s natural for there to be falling debris as your roof is being replaced and the last thing you would want is for your child to become injured in the process. If your children do go outside, consider taking them away from the house. For the inside of the home, keep any rooms that may become exposed to the elements off the contract work off limits. This includes walk up attics, upper bedrooms and bathrooms etc.

Consider the outdoor furniture
If you have any patio furniture set up outside, pack it away. Keep the areas around the outside of your home free and clear of any items that could become damaged during the roof replacement or that pose a health risk or limit workers’ access to the areas that they need to ensure job completion.

If you hire a quality roofing company, every effort will be made to ensure the job goes as smooth as possible with minimal disruption.
